Volvo is known worldwide as a family car. Packed with all the necessary safety features to take you to your destination of choice safely and efficiently, family men and couples with kids adore this reliable ride. So what sets the new 2008 Volvo C30 apart from all its Volvo predecessors, well for starters, the C30 is aiming to gain a market for DINKs (dual income no kids) or for hip couples whose youngsters have fled the nest.

And while it does look sleek and sporty, does it offer a sports-car performance for its drivers?

The Volvo C30 Design: 5/5

The 2008 C30 was designed under the guidance of Peter Horbury before he made the move to lead Ford Motor Company’s design team in North America. The C30 is sleek and curvy with an attention-grabbing hatchback rear that you can tell was inspired by the Classic 1800ES from the 1970s. Undoubtedly a very handsome ride with its ultra-modern and distinctive appearance.

Definitely a cool Volvo.

The Interior: 3/5

Strictly four passengers please! This 2-door sports coupe is definitely NOT a family car. While you can park a couple of adults on the C30 backseats, the ride won’t be so comfortable if they’re over 6 feet tall. You can do something about the modest trunk capacity though. Simply fold the backseats and you’ve got more space for your beloved pooch or extra luggage.

Safety Features: 5/5

As can be expected from Volvo, the popular automaker has loaded this sports coupe with all the available safety features on the market. You’ve got front, curtain and side airbags, an IDIS or Intelligent Driver Information System and stability control.

Trims and Engine: 4/5

Available in two cool trims, namely the T5 Version 2.0 and the T5 Version 1.0, the C30 comes with a single I5, 2.5-L, 227-HP engine that is capable of 28-mpg on the freeway and 19-mpg when cruising the city streets. It also comes with 5-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual transmission. Though not incredibly speedy, you won’t have a problem with lag when you use this trendy auto.

Conclusion:

Definitely a great car from Volvo. If speed isn’t much of an issue, then the C30 is one of the better auto investments you can make.

The Gas Monsters of the 70s

With the gas prices soaring up, this post is perfect. Think of it as commiserating. Cutting to the chase of it all, listed below are the vehicles that thrived on being gas guzzlers way back in the 70s, when bell bottoms and huge sunglasses were directly proportional to being cool.

1970-1973 Chrysler Imperial This car’s average miles per gallon (MPG) was 10 to 16. Way back when it was still brand spankin’ new, the Chrysler Imperial saw the 40 to 65 cents’ worth of gas. There were changes made in the grille and the front fascia over the years. By 1975, it finally bowed out of the market due to poor economy.

1977-1979 Lincoln Mark V This was one car which truly thrived on luxury. It had editions made with the help of world-renowned designers such as Cartier and Gucci. This Lincoln had an MPG that was somewhere between 3.5 to 7. During that time, the average cost of one gallon of gas was 65 cents to 90 cents.

1970-1979 Lincoln Continental Here is another Lincoln that was a gas guzzler in the 70s. The Lincoln Continental is eye-catching mainly because of its colors and its use of chrome, vinyl and steel. Under its hood is a 460 cid V8 engine and has an MPG of 7 to 12. For each gallon of gas, the owners of this car had to shell out 40 cents to 90 cents.

1971-1973 Buick Riviera Designed outrageously, this Buick had an average MPG that is between 5 and 8. Up until this day, this Buick Riviera model of the 70s is still worth as much as $25,000. Oh, were you going to ask about its way back when cost of gallon? It’s somewhere between 44 cents and 65 cents.

1971-1978 Oldsmobile Toronado Comfort and style. That’s what the 70 Oldsmobile Toronado was all about. Even made more appealing was the XSR prototype model, as this actually had retractable tops (powered). But back to “those days”: The cost of one gallon of gas for this pretty car was between 44 cents and 77 cents. Its average MPG was between 10 and 15.

1971-1978 Cadillac Eldorado 500 cid V8 engine had undoubtedly been a gas guzzler in its time. But never mind that, as it is truly made even more beautiful with each time it had undergone some revamp. The average MPG of this breathtaking car is somewhere between 16 and 18. And just exactly how much did one gallon of gas cost those days for this car? It was reportedly 44 cents to 77 cents.

1974-1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman If its style you’re after and if you’re filthy rich, then the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman is what you might be looking for. Sleek and elegant, this car had an average MPG of 11 to 16. You would’ve needed to dig into your pockets for each gallon of gas is acquired. The cost of one gallon of gas was 53 cents to 59 cents.

1976-1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham Sculpted bumper, noticeable wheel skirts and a spacious backseat – These are what made the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham a winner in terms of looks. It was a winner, too, when it came to devouring gas. Its average MPG was somewhere along 14 to 17. It had cost 59 cents to 77 cents for just one gallon of gas.

You’ve always heard the word “monster” combined with other words. It is the case this time, except that the word “monster” is used as an adjective. “Monster” is the best word to describe this particular mining truck. The photo above is enough to chase away any notion that the term “monster” is overrated.

Francis Bartley is the person behind the design of this startling truck. He said that the market for this truck does not go past 75 units per year. And that is the global market he’s talking about. The truck called T 282 B weighs 224 tons when empty and is 47 feet and g inches long. If you’re wondering about just how tall it is, then you must know that it stands 24 foot and 3 inches. The load it is able to carry is roughly around 400 tons. The T 282 B is powered by a diesel engine which manages to spew 3,650 horsepower. It makes use of two electric motors located at the rear axles. In the designer’s words, “So it’s more like a huge electric railroad locomotive than a conventional truck.”

Curious about just how much it would cost? Bartley reveals that in the U.S., it would cost around $3 million. This truck is often used in the following differentmines:

Ford Mustangs To Have A Church Built For Them

Religion is one of the longest standing (and reigning) institutions worldwide. Even before governments were set-up, religion was already there, running the lives of our ancestors. So many beliefs and sects have come out of it, which have been accepted and embraced by people. This resulted in churches and other religious institutions from sprouting left and right just so the people could have a place to worship. Due to the impact religion has done, you can’t fault Charles Ales for wanting to start his own sect. The problem here is that it doesn’t involve worshipping a higher being. Rather, it involves worshipping a four-wheeled entity called the Mustang.

Yes, you read it right. Charles Ales, a Kansas native, has decided to set-up what he calls The Mustang Church of America and Museum. He got the idea of putting up the church from his experience of dealing with other car aficionados whose obsession for cars borders (well almost) on religious fervor. Of course, being a car junkie himself also played a role in establishing the church.

“I’ve been around car nuts all my adult life,” said Ales. “You can mess with their wives, you can mess with their dogs, but you can’t mess with their cars. It borders on a religion with them, so I built them a church.”

The Mustang Church of America and Museum is measured at 100 x 70 feet and will open this summer. Ales will put his Mustang collections on display and has plans of hosting car shows, swap meets and even conduct blessings for two Mustang cars each year. Since they are a church, and Charles and his adopted son Robert Brunch just happens to be ordained ministers, they’ll be conducting Sunday services, just like what regular churches do.

However, what people will probably remember the church for is not the number of Mustangs it has on display, but for the mural it has on its wall. Instead of having a crucifix on the wall, Ales’ church will instead have a mural of Jesus driving a ’66 Mustang. Talk about Jesus racing down the highway just to save your life.

Who can forget that show, which showcases the celebrities, their houses and most especially their cars? Bugatti Veyron 16.4 / Price Tag: $1,192,057

This is the mother-of-all-expensive cars. Considered to be the “most expensive street-legal full production car”, this bad boy is able to hit up to 1,001 horsepower and a maximum speed of 253.81 mph. First produced by Volkswagen in September 2005, the car took its name from Le Mans race car driver Pierre Veyron. While being the most expensive, it isn’t the fastest. That title belongs to the SSC Ultimate Aero. The Bugatti Veyron, however, is considered to be the 2^nd fastest car in the world.

Pagani Zonda Roadster F C12S 7.3 / Price Tag: $667,321

Produced by Zagani, a small company in Italy in 1999, the Pagani Zonda Roadster holds the title of being the 8^th fastest car in the world. What makes it unique is that only 25 of these cars are produced each year. It’s a 2-seat coupe and convertible in one that’s capable of reaching 215 mph and is able to jump from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

SSC Ultimate Aero / Price Tag: $654,400

If Flash is the fastest superhero in the comic book universe (he beat Superman folks), then this car is currently the fastest car in the automotive world. This baby is hand-built folks. Nothing touched it except the loving hands of the people from Saleen, Hidden Creek Industries, Phil Frank Design and RML (now that’s a lot of loving hands). It’s the 4^th fastest car in the world and is capable of reaching the speed of 250 mph. The Saleen S7 is America’s first contribution to the supercar genre and first debuted at the Monterey Historic Races last August 19, 2000.

Volvo and the Boston Red Sox Join Forces

Are you a die-hard Red Sox fan? The type who had to endure the fabled “Curse of the Bambino” before the team won the World Series in 2004? The type who is present at every single game just to be able to watch them play and cheer them on? More importantly, were you there during their second World Series win? Well, if any of these questions apply to you then you may be interested in what the team and Volvo have in store.

The Boston Red Sox and Volvo have banded together to bring to the fold a commemorative Boston Red Sox themed Volvo C30 hatchback. The C30 hatchback, which carries a Passion Red finish, is Volvo’s way of celebrating the teams second World Series victory last 2007. The Red Sox C30 will sport the team’s logos on the car’s fenders, rear-glass hatch and floormats. Each car will have a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Anne Belec, CEO of Volvo Cars in North America, and Larry Lucchino, CEO of the Red Sox. The car will also have a plaque, which indicates the specific game the team won, their opponent and the final score.

There will be a total of 107 Red Sox themed Volvo C30 up for sale to match the team 107 wins. Each car will be numbered, with the label placed inside the car’s interiors. Volvo also plans to donate the 107^th Red Sox C30 to The Red Sox Foundation for their charity raffle to be held this year. Current price for one of these collector’s item cars will be set at $29,465 with an additional $745 destination charge.

Sales Dip Not Good For Automotive Market

Automobile manufacturers have hit a roadblock as the sales of their vehicles have dipped considerably this February compared to February of last year. Hmm, that’s not a good way to kick-off the year, folks.

Considered to be the lowest sales drop in a decade, clients have shied away from making big retail purchases, which resulted in a mediocre output of 16.37% for the dates of February 1 to February 17. The statistics, released by research firm J.D. Power & Associates, covered only retail sales made by car manufacturers. Sales generated through rental companies and agencies were not included since retail sales are considered to be the basis that there was indeed a demand coming from the clients. Due to concerns over housing, fuel prices, and inability to avail of credit loans, consumers have opted not to shell out their money to purchase automobiles. Companies like Toyota and Ford felt the demand for their product decline because of this hold out. Chrysler was dealt a big blow when it sales slipped to 27.5% despite making a commitment to their customers that they will work on adding more features to their vehicles. Out of all the car companies that were affected by the sales slump, it was only General Motors who got to enjoy a good start, thanks to its incentives and up-to-date products. All this despite encountering a slump during the first 17 days of February this year when it was only able to sell 31% of its vehicles, a low output compared to what they were able to achieve during the first 18 days of February last year.

However, despite the sales slump this month, some analysts believe that automotive sales will make a comeback during the second half of the year. That could bode well for the car companies affected by the sales drop. But only time will tell whether the forecast they made will come true or not.

Single Digit License Plate Sells For Seven Digits

Ever wanted your own car plate indicating your name and your preferred set of numbers? Nice right? It gives you this unique feeling, this emotional high that you’re better and a cut-above the rest of the pack. It allows other people to distinguish you from the other vehicles around you. Well if that’s your thing and you have tons of money to spend, why not take a plane and head off to the United Arab Emirates. You’ll end up finding more than sand and camels when you get there. It’s actually the place where you can find the world’s largest mall, the world’s largest tower, a group of islands depicting the map of the world, and very (and I mean very) expensive plates that you can get your grubby little hands on to.

The United Arab Emirates, composed of seven different states or “emirates,” has recently gone bonkers for license plates bearing a single digit. During an auction held in Abu Dhabi, license plates with the numbers “5” and “7” immediately sold out. The plate with the number “5” sold for 25 million dirhams which is equivalent to a whopping $6.75 million while the plate with the number “7” sold for 11 million dirhams, equivalent to $2.97 million. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Plans have already been set in place to auction off the mother of all single digit plates, the plate bearing the number “1.” The price tag that this plate could achieve during the auction is expected to set records and make it the most expensive plate in the world.

“As low as the number goes, as high the price goes also,” said Abdullah Al Mannaei, the man responsible for the auction.

Despite the luxurious price tags generated by these auctioned plates, know that the money made from these biddings is for a worthy cause. Income from these high priced plates will be used by the government to fund and help car accident victims. As of this date, five auctions have already been conducted generating an amazing $56 million and selling 300 plates.

That amount could definitely help car accident victims. And probably put kids to school, get rid off world debt and feed an entire populace. But that’s just me.

For a decade now, Mercedes-Benz’ Smart ForTwo cars went around places and have been accepted in Europe and just recently in Canada. This year, nothing can stop the Smart Cars from penetrating the U.S. automobile market as it finally reached its next destination – Buffalo, New York.

Manufactured by the Germany based-Daimler AG, the micro Smart car arrived in its designated exclusive dealer–the Smart Center Buffalo, which is just one of the 62 Smart ForTwo exclusive distributors in the U.S. The 3,000-sq-ft. establishment will house the Smart ForTwo cars, which can only fit two adult passengers at a time. This new center joined the Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo located in Main Street. Hyundai Vies for Luxury Sedan Market Share with ‘Genesis’

In his article to the New York Times last December 30, 2007, contributor Don Sherman highlights ten of the most progressive technological advances made by the automotive industry in 2007:

1. Lithium-Ion Batteries – These do away with fuel altogether by providing energy to an electric motor. Many big-name companies such as Toyota and General Motors are still developing their technology, but Tesla Motors will be able to deliver cars running purely on lithium-ion batteries by 2008.

2. Two-Mode Hybrid – Earlier hybrid models only had one mode: the car shifts from gasoline to electric when it slows down or becomes idle; and it switches back to gasoline after a certain speed. This mode—called the input split mode—can also use both gasoline and electricity when more power is need – such as when towing.

Now, the collaboration between GM and DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler and Chrysler) bore fruit in the form of a second mode called a compound split. Available in the new Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Two-Mode SUVs, the compound split mode allows for cruising at faster speeds while still saving on fuel.

3. Smart Idle Stop System – Mazda has come up with an engine that doesn’t shudder when reawakened from fuel-saving slumber.

4. Sync – This is a network that connects portable gear such as cellphones to the car’s audio system. Developed by Ford and Microsoft, Sync allows the driver to issue basic voice commands to play stored music or make phone calls.

5. Around View Monitor from Infiniti – Four miniature cameras on the car’s sides, front and rear are merged to provide a single bird’s-eye view on the dashboard screen.

6. Diesotto from Mercedes-Benz – This is the name of the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine of the Mercedes-Benz F700 S-Class sedan. Named after Rudolf Diesel and Nicolas Otto, this engine has diesel efficiency and gasoline cleanliness at the same time.

7. Height-Adjustable Child Seat – Introduced first by Volvo, this seat supports small children at a high level, and larger ones at a lower level. This gives kids a better view while helping them be held properly and more securely by their seatbelts.

8. Durable Carbon Fiber – Ordinary carbon fiber is prone to peeling after years of being exposed under the sun if not protected by paint, but GM has created a clear-coat formulation for carbon fiber so that this can withstand the damaging UV rays.

9. Eight-Speed Transmission from Lexus – Quieter cruising, faster acceleration, and nominal improvement in gas mileage is what Lexus achieved with a wider spread of ratios between first and eighth gears.

In addition, Panasonic system receives the second spot for the Acura MDX and achieves the third rank for the Honda Pilot.

According to Mike Marshall, J.D.
