BMW has released a wide range of sporty upgrades for its 6-Series and X6 line-ups, all designed to boost their driving dynamics and visual appeal. Now that’s what you call adding trendy and sexy to an already powerful line-up.

The Edition Sport package is available across the 6-Series range, and comprises a new bonnet, 19-inch alloys and sports suspension. The 650i also adds a sports exhaust.

Moreover, there are seven colors to choose from with this Edition Sport package, while the cabin gets brushed aluminum trim. Prices start at £53,445 for the 630i, rising to £65,820 for the 650i Convertible. For even more sporting appeal, a competition package is now available for the M6, which includes lowered suspension.

A redesigned bonnet and lightweight M Sport double-spoke wheels complete the changes. The pack adds £2,180 to the M6’s £84,500 price tag. Finally, the X6 has a new flagship which is the xDrive 50i. Powered by a 480bhp twin-turbo V8, it hits 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, emits 299g/km of CO2 and costs £53,930. This 6-Series was introduced in 2003, filling the hole in the lineup left since the end of the 8-Series’ production.

India is GM’s next target

General Motors was set to sign an agreement with the western Indian state of Maharashtra to open an engine and transmission plant to be located in Talegaon. In GM already has a second vehicle plant in Talegaon that will begin operations next week. According to one of the spokesman of the company, describing to this new businesses venture, “It is an extension of the investment GM has made in Talegaon for the vehicle facility.”

India, specifically Gujarat, already manufactures the other car models like The Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet Optra, and Chevrolet Spark. The facility that will begin operations next week will have a capacity of 140,000, boosting GM’s overall capacity in India to 225,000. With the sale of passenger vehicles per year in India estimated to reach 2 million units by 2010, the country represents a ripe market for GM, especially in the genre of small cars.

With this development, General Motors will be in direct competition with another car manufacturer, Tata Motors, which creates the Nano, costing roughly $2,283 per car and set to launch in October.

In addition, Ford, another rival of GM is also set to begin operations sometime soon. Its engine assembly will be located in Southern India. It is expected that the facility will reach an eventual capacity of 250,000 units.

Toyota will update Hilux for 2009

The Toyota Hilux will be getting an update for 2009. Toyota will include the following modifications: a new grille and wider front bumper, new alloy wheel designs, and new kit including a lockable tailgate for hardtop-equipped Extra and Double Cab models. In addition, the 3.0 D4D diesel engine now comes with a new five-speed automatic gearbox, promising improved torque and fuel economy: it’ll now return 31.7mpg and 236g/km.

The truck’s interior will also get a revamp like a new steering wheel with audio controls, a redesigned gearshift console and new instruments, a new automatic air conditioning system with dust and pollen filter, and new sports seats in the Double Cab. Leather upholstery will be available for Invincible models.

Its suspension will also get an improvement. Now it has a revised front shock absorbers and new rear axle bearings, plus new bushes, and Toyota promises more stable and predictable handling with a reduction in vibration. Larger brakes are also fitted. The truck’s engine will be available in 2.5-litre D-4D HL2 Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab, and all of these models have electric windows, air conditioning, an alarm, remote central locking, twin front airbags and anti-lock brakes. HL3 models add a leather-trimmed steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, tinted glass and 15” alloy wheels, and Invincible versions have 17” alloys, leather upholstery and stability control. 3.0 D-4D Double Cab models now have side and curtain airbags. Metallic paint colors are now made available for the Hilux.

First look of the Kia Soul

Before the year ends, Autopartswarehouse anticipates the unveiling of Kia’s production version of its Soul ‘urban crossover’. According to sources, it is confirmed that it will be presented at the Paris Motor Show this October and most likely will hit Europe by next year.

The new Kia Soul will be available by February next year with options of 124bhp diesel and petrol engines based on the DOHC engines already fitted to the European-built Cee’d. Moreover, manual or automatic transmissions for the model will be available while the right-hand drive production is due to start in March.

Kia’s Gwangju facility in Korea will manufacture the model and a 2-litre; 139bhp petrol engine will also be available in the US and several non-European markets.

As a five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive, the Kia Soul has a high roofline and an unusually long wheelbase. Its design is basically based on its vertical measurements, wherein the overall height is 1,610mm but the base of the windscreen is 135mm higher than a typical compact car, the hip-points are 120mm higher and the ground clearance is raised by 45mm.

The all-aluminium petrol engine also produces 124bhp at 6,300rpm and 115lb-ft of torque at 4,200rpm. The diesel engine generates 124bhp at 4,000rpm and maximum torque of 188lb-ft at 2,000rpm.

Kia claims the cabin will deliver head, leg and shoulder room that matches or beats many larger vehicles and the company says headroom (1020/1005mm front/rear), legroom (1070/990mm front/rear) and shoulder room (1403/1400mm front/rear) will ensure Soul can easily adapt to the changing demands of owners.

Chrysler maybe selling The Dodge Viper

The Dodge Viper is on hot waters. After gathering several information and news from different sources, it is the talk of the town that Chrysler is considering selling off the rights to its supercar. According to Chrysler Chief Executive Officer Bob Nardelli, the company is confirming about discussions and negotiations with a number of potential buyers for the Viper and its ongoing business.

First launched in 1992 to compete with rival Chevrolet Corvette, The Dodge Viper and the latest fourth-generation model launched this year features an 8.4-litre V10 which has 600bhp and 560 lb-ft. It’s good for 202mph (coupe) or 197mph (roadster), with 0-62mph acceleration in around 3.5 seconds. Track-only racing versions are also offered. Chrysler has just made over 25,000 Vipers in 16 years of production but this all-American sports car is much-loved by muscle car enthusiasts worldwide.

It is envisioned by analysts that possible investors for The Viper could come from developing regions like China, India, Russia or perhaps the Middle East as it will be a very sound investment.

Chrysler has been noted for selling its non-essential assets which includes its Pacifica design centre in California, the Tritec engine factory in Brazil and several office facilities in Detroit, as well as radically cutting production and axing slow-selling models since their separation from Daimler. The low-volume Viper business can be easily separated from its other activities.

'Suicide doors' for the new Rolls Royce

The RR4 is the code name of the new baby Rolls Royce. As you can see in the spy shot pictures, this new luxury model will feature suicide doors. These images of the shorter-wheelbase Roller give a fair indication of what the car will look like and details of the body, doors, bonnet and door handles are all exposed.

These new doors are really extreme and radical, the photos provided show the hinges on the rear door are located at the rearmost part of panel, which suggest the new car will have suicide doors, although Rolls will call them ‘coach’ doors. A lot of people are getting curious on how these doors will look like personally. It is an extreme jump for Rolls Royce to deliver more stylish and out of the box design.

But apparently, this new baby Rolls Royce is no doubt still a big car; however, this would probably use the BMW 7-Series platform. The car will be powered by its own bespoke engine, rather than a BMW power plant. Although engineered in Germany, the RR4 will be built at Rolls-Royce’s new production line in Goodwood.

It will be expected that this new car will be introduced on March 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show and would go on stores in 2010. Expect the price of the RRX to be announced sometime soon. Anticipation for the suicide doors of these Rolls Royce is pretty much intense especially for Autopartswarehouse readers who are looking for a drastic change in the style of upcoming car models.

Seat Ibiza Cupra Preview

There will be something to look forward to for Autopartswarehouse at the Paris Motor Show this October. At the planned car show, people are pretty much excited as Seat is set to launch its hot-hatch Ibiza Cupra.

This model, complete with twin turbos to give 180bhp, and the new seven-speed DSG sequential-shift gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifts, will get the VW Group’s 1.4 TSI engine.

Moreover, to add style and fashion to the car, large 17” wheels will be installed as well bigger bumpers, a centrally-mounted trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe and larger air vents plus Cupra badging and bespoke interior detailing with bucket-style seats and aluminium pedals.

On the technical side of things, the Ibiza Cupra will have stiffened and lowered suspension while stability control is standard-fit. But people would have to wait days before the on-sale date in order to have a glimpse of the car’s price.

In addition, Seat will also launch a new-generation low-emissions, high-economy Ibiza Ecomotive in Paris. According to a few sources, this will come with the 80bhp 1.4 TDI diesel engine and particulate filter, bringing carbon dioxide emissions down to below the 100g/km mark.

Like the previous Ibiza Ecomotive cars, the near-75mpg fuel consumption figure has been achieved through modifications to gear ratios, aerodynamics, engine management and the fitment of low rolling-resistance tires.

This super mini manufactured by the Volkswagen Group spans four generations. It has been available in either three- or five-door hatchback variants; since 1993, saloon, coupé and estate versions are sold as the SEAT Cordoba.

Recently, Honda’s Japanese competitors released the all-new Corolla in showrooms as well as a replacement for Mazda3 which due next year. A compact four-wheel-drive crossover that should be fuel-efficient and eco-friendly, The CX-5 is more the same as The Ford Kuga. Because it is light weight, aerodynamic outline and efficient direct-injection petrol engines, Mazda is aiming for a 30% improvement in fuel consumption and emissions.

Moreover, this concept highlights plastic bumpers, panels and engine cover, as well as aluminium and aluminium alloys for its bonnet, chassis and engine block. It’s 100kg lighter than a comparable current-production model like the Kuga. It is fitted with a next-generation version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine as used in the CX-7, with variable valve control, new combustion control system and new catalytic converter, and improved thermal efficiency, as well as the next-generation six-speed automatic gearbox.

First pictures of the Chevrolet Cruze released

In anticipation to the much awaited debut of the Cruze at the Paris Motor Show in October, Chevrolet has released some pictures of its all-new small family car at the GM Lordstown Assembly Plant.

This upcoming compact car Daewoo Lacetti several of its badge engineered variants including the Chevrolet Lacetti (Europe), the Chevrolet Optra (Mexico) and Holden Viva (Australia and New Zealand), as well as the non-related Chevrolet Cobalt (United States and Canada). The Cruze “was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world,” according to GM. This will go on sale next spring and three engines will be offered at launch: 1.6-litre 110bhp and 1.8-litre 138bhp petrol units, both with variable valve timing or a 2.0-litre 148bhp common-rail turbodiesel.

Chevrolet says the car features ‘bold styling cues’ and the bodystyle includes an arching roofline, sloping rear-pillars large and sweeping headlamp units that wrap around the nose of the car. Other design themes include a concave shoulder line, and two-tier grille.

Taewan Kim, Cruze’s chief designer said in an interview that they wanted the design of the Cruze was “to be bold, not evolutionary”. “We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world”, he added.

The Mitsubishi Outlander

In my previous post, I wrote about compact SUVs receiving Top Safety picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). One of those top rated SUV when it comes to safety is the Mitsubishi Outlander.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is quite an interesting SUV, so here’s a brief background.

Created by one of the world’s car manufacturers, Mitsubishi Motors, The Outlander, a compact crossover SUV, originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek, was introduced in Japan in 2001. It was based on the Mitsubishi ASX concept vehicle exhibited at the 2001 North American International Auto Show.

The name Airtek came into the picture in order to “describe the vehicle’s ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a ‘free-as-a-bird’ manner”, and was “coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure.” The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a “feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure.”

In order to increase the overall length of the car when it was released in 2003, The Outlander was given a modified front grille and headlights.

In 2005, the second wave of the vehicle was introduced and most markets named it The Outlander. It was built on the company’s GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA’s Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which are manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the Outlander.

Safety is a probably one of most important things to consider when buying a vehicle, that is why crash tests play a very significant role in determining if these vehicles exceeds or fails safety hazards. In the recent crash tests regulated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US, a good number of compact SUVs received high scores.

Mitsubishi Outlander: good performance in front, side, and rear tests and standard electronic stability control.

Most notably the latest Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Tiguan both scored good ratings in the front, side and rear-impact tests, as did the Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute. The Honda CR-V, Honda Element and Subaru Forester have also received high marks in earlier crash tests.

Volkswagen Tiguan: “In the latest tests, the Tiguan’s performance is a standout,” said institute President Adrian Lund. “It sailed through the front and side crash tests without a single downgrade for structure or measures of injury likelihood recorded on the dummy. This is one of four models in this group that afford superior crash protection in their class.”

According to Adrian Lund, the Institute’s president, the Outlander and the Tiguan were equipped with standard electronic stability control — which guards against rollovers — and side air bags.

The safety equipment helped the vehicles show improvements across the board, including in the side tests.

Lund added, “This is a huge change from just five years ago when most small SUVs were rated either marginal or poor in our side test, and standard side air bags and electronic stability control were rare.”

However, there were also a number of compact SUVs that didn’t achieve impressive results. These were the Jeep Patriot, Jeep Wrangler, Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent who only had acceptable ratings.

Hello Volvo! The 2008 Volvo C30

Volvo is known worldwide as a family car. Packed with all the necessary safety features to take you to your destination of choice safely and efficiently, family men and couples with kids adore this reliable ride. So what sets the new 2008 Volvo C30 apart from all its Volvo predecessors, well for starters, the C30 is aiming to gain a market for DINKs (dual income no kids) or for hip couples whose youngsters have fled the nest.

And while it does look sleek and sporty, does it offer a sports-car performance for its drivers?

The Volvo C30 Design: 5/5

The 2008 C30 was designed under the guidance of Peter Horbury before he made the move to lead Ford Motor Company’s design team in North America. The C30 is sleek and curvy with an attention-grabbing hatchback rear that you can tell was inspired by the Classic 1800ES from the 1970s. Undoubtedly a very handsome ride with its ultra-modern and distinctive appearance.

Definitely a cool Volvo.

The Interior: 3/5

Strictly four passengers please! This 2-door sports coupe is definitely NOT a family car. While you can park a couple of adults on the C30 backseats, the ride won’t be so comfortable if they’re over 6 feet tall. You can do something about the modest trunk capacity though. Simply fold the backseats and you’ve got more space for your beloved pooch or extra luggage.

Safety Features: 5/5

As can be expected from Volvo, the popular automaker has loaded this sports coupe with all the available safety features on the market. You’ve got front, curtain and side airbags, an IDIS or Intelligent Driver Information System and stability control.

Trims and Engine: 4/5

Available in two cool trims, namely the T5 Version 2.0 and the T5 Version 1.0, the C30 comes with a single I5, 2.5-L, 227-HP engine that is capable of 28-mpg on the freeway and 19-mpg when cruising the city streets. It also comes with 5-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual transmission. Though not incredibly speedy, you won’t have a problem with lag when you use this trendy auto.

Conclusion:

Definitely a great car from Volvo. If speed isn’t much of an issue, then the C30 is one of the better auto investments you can make.

The Gas Monsters of the 70s

With the gas prices soaring up, this post is perfect. Think of it as commiserating. Cutting to the chase of it all, listed below are the vehicles that thrived on being gas guzzlers way back in the 70s, when bell bottoms and huge sunglasses were directly proportional to being cool.

1970-1973 Chrysler Imperial This car’s average miles per gallon (MPG) was 10 to 16. Way back when it was still brand spankin’ new, the Chrysler Imperial saw the 40 to 65 cents’ worth of gas. There were changes made in the grille and the front fascia over the years. By 1975, it finally bowed out of the market due to poor economy.

1977-1979 Lincoln Mark V This was one car which truly thrived on luxury. It had editions made with the help of world-renowned designers such as Cartier and Gucci. This Lincoln had an MPG that was somewhere between 3.5 to 7. During that time, the average cost of one gallon of gas was 65 cents to 90 cents.

1970-1979 Lincoln Continental Here is another Lincoln that was a gas guzzler in the 70s. The Lincoln Continental is eye-catching mainly because of its colors and its use of chrome, vinyl and steel. Under its hood is a 460 cid V8 engine and has an MPG of 7 to 12. For each gallon of gas, the owners of this car had to shell out 40 cents to 90 cents.

1971-1973 Buick Riviera Designed outrageously, this Buick had an average MPG that is between 5 and 8. Up until this day, this Buick Riviera model of the 70s is still worth as much as $25,000. Oh, were you going to ask about its way back when cost of gallon? It’s somewhere between 44 cents and 65 cents.

1971-1978 Oldsmobile Toronado Comfort and style. That’s what the 70 Oldsmobile Toronado was all about. Even made more appealing was the XSR prototype model, as this actually had retractable tops (powered). But back to “those days”: The cost of one gallon of gas for this pretty car was between 44 cents and 77 cents. Its average MPG was between 10 and 15.

1971-1978 Cadillac Eldorado 500 cid V8 engine had undoubtedly been a gas guzzler in its time. But never mind that, as it is truly made even more beautiful with each time it had undergone some revamp. The average MPG of this breathtaking car is somewhere between 16 and 18. And just exactly how much did one gallon of gas cost those days for this car? It was reportedly 44 cents to 77 cents.

1974-1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman If its style you’re after and if you’re filthy rich, then the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman is what you might be looking for. A Monster of a Truck

You’ve always heard the word “monster” combined with other words. It is the case this time, except that the word “monster” is used as an adjective. “Monster” is the best word to describe this particular mining truck. The photo above is enough to chase away any notion that the term “monster” is overrated.

Francis Bartley is the person behind the design of this startling truck. He said that the market for this truck does not go past 75 units per year. And that is the global market he’s talking about. The truck called T 282 B weighs 224 tons when empty and is 47 feet and g inches long. If you’re wondering about just how tall it is, then you must know that it stands 24 foot and 3 inches. The load it is able to carry is roughly around 400 tons. The T 282 B is powered by a diesel engine which manages to spew 3,650 horsepower. It makes use of two electric motors located at the rear axles. In the designer’s words, “So it’s more like a huge electric railroad locomotive than a conventional truck.”

Curious about just how much it would cost? Bartley reveals that in the U.S., it would cost around $3 million. This truck is often used in the following differentmines:

Ford Mustangs To Have A Church Built For Them

Religion is one of the longest standing (and reigning) institutions worldwide. Even before governments were set-up, religion was already there, running the lives of our ancestors. So many beliefs and sects have come out of it, which have been accepted and embraced by people. This resulted in churches and other religious institutions from sprouting left and right just so the people could have a place to worship. Due to the impact religion has done, you can’t fault Charles Ales for wanting to start his own sect. The problem here is that it doesn’t involve worshipping a higher being. Rather, it involves worshipping a four-wheeled entity called the Mustang.

Yes, you read it right. Charles Ales, a Kansas native, has decided to set-up what he calls The Mustang Church of America and Museum. He got the idea of putting up the church from his experience of dealing with other car aficionados whose obsession for cars borders (well almost) on religious fervor. Of course, being a car junkie himself also played a role in establishing the church.

“I’ve been around car nuts all my adult life,” said Ales. “You can mess with their wives, you can mess with their dogs, but you can’t mess with their cars. It borders on a religion with them, so I built them a church.”

The Mustang Church of America and Museum is measured at 100 x 70 feet and will open this summer. Ales will put his Mustang collections on display and has plans of hosting car shows, swap meets and even conduct blessings for two Mustang cars each year. Since they are a church, and Charles and his adopted son Robert Brunch just happens to be ordained ministers, they’ll be conducting Sunday services, just like what regular churches do.

However, what people will probably remember the church for is not the number of Mustangs it has on display, but for the mural it has on its wall. Instead of having a crucifix on the wall, Ales’ church will instead have a mural of Jesus driving a ’66 Mustang. Talk about Jesus racing down the highway just to save your life.
